As the orca surfaced once more, the sunlight hit its back at just the right angle. The captain’s grip tightened on the railing.

There was something attached to the whale. It wasn’t a natural mark, and it wasn’t seaweed. It looked like a tangled, heavy mass clinging to its skin.
The crew rushed to the other side of the boat as the orca passed again. The mysterious bundle shifted with the current, but remained stubbornly attached.
A low murmur went through the men. Was the whale injured? Or was it carrying something far more precious?
