The weight of the whale was staggering. Every time Nan tried to create distance, the giant nudged her back, its rough skin scraping against her diving suit. She felt the raw power of an animal that could end her life with a single flick of its tail.

For nearly ten minutes, the whale pushed her through the open water. Her research vessel was getting further away, and her team watched from the deck in stunned silence, unable to intervene.
Nan’s heart raced as she felt herself being lifted out of the water on the whale’s head. Why was this peaceful herbivore acting so aggressively? She began to wonder if she had finally crossed a line with a creature she thought she understood.
But as the whale continued its strange behavior, Nan noticed something even more disturbing. Another humpback whale had appeared nearby, and it was behaving erratically.
