Lily’s hands trembled as she opened the letter. “If you are reading this,” the note began, “then I am no longer here. What is in this shed is everything I have saved over my whole life.”
She looked up from the paper and began opening the first box on the shelf. Her breath caught in her throat.
Inside were stacks of carefully bundled currency, shimmering gold coins, and antique silver jewelry. Another box contained high-value bonds and legal documents that dated back decades.
The sheer amount of wealth was staggering. Mabel had lived a life of extreme poverty by choice. But as Lily read the next line of the letter, her confusion turned into a different kind of shock.
