Larry’s house was tucked away on the edge of town. When they arrived, he practically pulled them inside, checking the street behind them. On his kitchen table sat a glowing laptop screen filled with files Stacy didn’t recognize.

“Your father has a history he never told you about,” Larry began. He explained that since Mark was a teenager, he had struggled with a hidden “habit”—one that involved late nights at the dog tracks and sketchy backroom casinos.
The black sedan belonged to a group Larry had been tracking for years—men who didn’t take “no” for an answer when it came to debts. Mark hadn’t left because he didn’t love them; he had left because he thought he was a target.
