The central staircase was a masterpiece of 1860s craftsmanship, rising into the shadows of the upper floors. Near its base sat a grand piano, its keys covered in a thick layer of dust, as if waiting for a ghostly hand to play a final melody.

In the kitchen, a blue and white china set sat in exceptional condition. A tea kettle remained on the stove. It looked less like an abandoned house and more like a family had simply stepped out for a walk and never returned.
Every room offered a new “gem” to be found—portraits of children, a safe built by the Cincinnati-based Halls Safe Company, and bookcases filled with well-preserved volumes of history and law.
However, the atmosphere shifted when Brian found the second staircase. While the main stairs led to the grand bedrooms, this smaller, narrower set of steps led down into the dark.
