The mystery of the abandonment deepened when Brian looked into the legal history of the estate. Marian had bequeathed the property to the local school district under one strict condition: it must be used for educational and historical purposes.

Yet, for forty years, the school board did nothing. They let the nine-acre farmstead, with its horse barns, smokehouses, and carriages, crumble into the earth. They had been given a treasure, and they chose to let it rot.
Why would a community ignore such a massive gift? Some whispered about the cost of maintenance, while others suggested that the “educational” requirement was a burden no one wanted to carry.
But as Brian moved toward the final wing of the mansion, he found evidence of a much more recent presence. Someone had been inside, and they hadn’t been there to learn history.
