Driven by a restless energy, Lucy decided to strip the old wallpaper in Emma’s room. She thought that by seeing the bare plaster, she would prove to herself there was nothing there. But as the paper came away, she noticed a strange anomaly.

In one specific section of the wall, the plaster felt colder than the rest. When she tapped it with her knuckles, the sound wasn’t the dull thud of solid brick. It was hollow.
She grabbed a measuring tape and began checking the dimensions of the room against the guest room next door. Her hands began to shake as she realized the numbers didn’t add up.
There was a gap—a space roughly three feet deep—that shouldn’t exist. It was a “void” in the middle of the house that had been completely sealed off from any entrance.
